THE STARFISH STORY

Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘I made a difference for the starfish’? Here is the story where this sentence is included:

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who went to his house by the ocean to write his articles. Every day, before starting his work, this wise man would take a walk by the ocean to gather energy. One of the days he was walking, he saw a human silhouette moving like a dancer on the beach. As he approached the silhouette, he realized it was a young boy. Also, the young boy didn’t seem to be dancing much. The wise man said to the young boy, who was picking things from the beach and throwing them into the sea:

“Good morning, may I ask what you are doing?”

The boy pauses for a moment and then replies,
“I’m throwing starfish into the ocean.”
The wise man asks, ‘Well, why are you throwing the starfish into the ocean?’ ‘The sun has already risen and the tide is receding; if I don’t throw them into the ocean, they will die,’ the young boy replies.
The wise man responds; “Don’t you see that the beach is very big and there are too many starfish; what you are doing won’t change anything.”
After listening to the wise man, the young boy bends down, picks up another starfish from the ground, throws it towards the ocean, and says, “Look, it made a difference for this one.” The wise man, unable to say anything in astonishment, walks towards his hut and tries to grasp the essence of the young man’s behavior all night. The next day, as soon as he wakes up, he runs to the young man and spends the whole day throwing starfish into the ocean….

The Starfish story is the story of us needing to be individuals who realize the difference in making a difference, who realize and implement things instead of watching and judging them. It is up to you to be a player in the universe and choose to make a difference, rather than being an observer in the universe and watching what happens…

THE MEANING OF THE SEA

THE MEANING OF THE SEA FOR AN OPEN WATER SWIMMER!

For an open water swimmer, the sea is not just a place for sport; it carries a deep, multi-layered meaning:

Freedom: There are no lane lines or walls like in a pool. The swimmer determines their own route, pace, and rhythm together with the sea.

Partnership with nature: Currents, waves, wind, temperature… The sea is not an “opponent,” but an environment that must be listened to and understood.

Uncertainty and courage: No day is ever the same. This teaches the open water swimmer to make peace with what cannot be controlled.

Mental space: Long strokes, rhythmic breathing… For many swimmers, the sea is like meditation; the mind calms and the inner voice becomes clearer.

Humility: The sea is always greater. The open water swimmer knows this and shows respect.

Facing yourself: Loneliness, fatigue, fear, endurance… All of them emerge in the water.

In short, for an open water swimmer, the sea is a mirror, a teacher, and a space of freedom.
